The Gallery – Shoes
September 7, 2011 by Lauren
This weeks Gallery theme is shoes. Being at my parents house I couldn’t take photos of my epic collection that my husband hates so had to think a little bit harder. I was at a friends house the other day and she showed me her shoe closet. I swear there were about 150 shoe boxes in there! I was so overwhelmed that I totally missed the opportunity to take a photograph to share with you all!

The Gallery – World Photography Day
August 24, 2011 by Lauren
I love taking photos, Spud is 2.5 years old and has over 3000 photos on my pc. That doesn’t include the ones that were deleted. When Tara at Sticky Fingers announced that World Photography day was this weeks theme I was a little apprehensive. I love taking photos but I’m not exactly a master photographer. I take photos of fast moving children, probably one of the hardest subjects to capture. My photos are my memories, some are blurry, some are out of focus and most would have professional photographers cringing.
Then I read this quote:
“Today, we take our photographs for granted. But next time you’re flicking though photos from your last holiday, remember that there was once a time when photography didn’t exist. A time when those precious moments couldn’t be captured, uploaded and shared”.
I realised that it wasn’t about skill but about how amazing it is that we have technology to freeze moments in time. It was about my love of photographs and my love of memories. My children are growing at speed right and in the blink of an eye they will be adult men towering over me. I chose to make a memory of my two gorgeous boys and the joy that the simple things bring.

The Gallery – Black and White
August 17, 2011 by Lauren
For this weeks theme I tried to think outside the box and ran through everything that was black and white. Zebra’s, Penguins, Newspapers, Skunks etc etc but then hit a brick wall. I can’t just walk down the road and find a Zebra to photograph.
I love black and white photos and think they look really smart displayed on walls in black frames. It’s quite handy because I also wanted to display Sonogram pictures and it all ties in nicely.
This is our living room wall
Now almost 3 years ago we moved house and I found the perfect frame for our other wall. It came from Matalan and has photographs of models in. We put it up on the wall and got on with sorting out the rest of the house. Before we knew it Spud was born and I still hadn’t gotten around to putting our own photos in the frame. People would come to our house and look at the photos commenting things like “Wow you’ve been diving?!” and “What a lovely family you have.” Most of the time I would admit it but other times I’d play along secretly chuckling to myself.
Last August we moved house again and the Hubby put it on the wall. The task kept getting bumped to the bottom of the list until one day last month I decided enough was enough. The Hubby caught me browsing all of our photos and declared that actually he quite liked our Matalan family so they have stayed put and still shine out of the frame showing off activities that we can only dream of!

The Gallery – Water
August 10, 2011 by Lauren
I am not a huge fan of water. I have a panic disorder and often feel like I am trapped when neck deep in a pool or the sea. I also hate the sea because of the fear of the unknown. Despite my fears I have been blessed with water babies!
Both my children have loved water right from birth. We have never experienced bath times shrouded by screams, bath time calms them both down immensely. Spike can be crying his little head off in the living room but if you take him upstairs and lie him on the floor outside the bathroom in preparation for bath time he is instantly quiet and really quite excited. Spud is the same and runs up the stairs ready for some adventures with his ducks and boats. If for some reason we have to skip bath time one night I feel guilty – not because they are going to bed stinky but because they are missing out on one of their favourite times of the day!

The Gallery – Birth
August 3, 2011 by Lauren
When Tara from Sticky Fingers announced that The Gallery theme would be Birth I decided that I would try to think outside the box. However the more I thought about it the more it made sense to write about child birth. After all the birth of my first son completely changed my life.
Before Spud I was sinking deeper and deeper into a state of unhappiness and my marriage was well and truly on the rocks. In late June 2008 I decided to stop trying for a baby as it wasn’t the best time for anybody. On July 7th 2008 I found out I was pregnant. What followed has to be the hardest 9 months of my life. I desperately tried to get my life back on track and myself into a happy place before welcoming a baby into the mix. My labour with him sums up those 9 months. At 2am Friday morning my waters broke. Spud was born 47 hours later after 40 hours of contractions that did absolutely nothing except hurt. I was induced and he was eventually helped out with ventouse after getting his head wedged. When he was born my whole life changed. Literally the moment he was given to me (after a very scary couple of minutes where he was on the resus table) all the troubles just evaporated. Things weren’t totally fixed but our perspectives and priorities took a whole new road.
Life still had ups and downs for the next year and me and the Hubby were in a place where we could discuss a brother or sister for Spud. We decided to aim for at least a 2 year age gap but Spike decided not to wait that long and was conceived 3 months earlier than we had anticipated leaving us with a 21 month age gap instead! I spent most of that pregnancy worrying that I would have the same labour again. I also spent a lot of the time in denial. I am a total control freak and the fact that he was 3 months earlier than I had expected him to be was quite hard for me to deal with. My labour started exactly the same as Spud’s. I was devastated, I didn’t want to go through the same thing again and felt let down by my midwife as I had told her of my concerns and was always told “no two labours are the same!” Luckily I didn’t get any contractions until they induced me the next day and Spike was born naturally 4 hours later. I felt so proud of myself and had a totally different rush of feelings. Him being born didn’t bring relief, just utter happiness.
