  1. The Huggies Potty Training Challenge Day 3

    August 13, 2011 by Lauren

Days 1 and 2 went brilliantly so I didn’t expect anything less today.  He woke up and we sat him straight on the potty.  I think we aren’t being quick enough at this part because his Huggies PULL-UPS® are always wet when we take them off.  Obviously I know we have a way to go until he is dry at night but he doesn’t need a wee when he gets up so he must empty his bladder when he first wakes.

The Hubby took the boys downstairs whilst I tried to get a lie in.  Tried being the operative word!  Eventually I gave up and he said that Spud hadn’t yet been for a wee despite being asked every 5 minutes.  I asked him and straight away he said yes, rushed to the potty and preceded to do a huge wee!  Somebody was trying to get Daddy into trouble!  We had a morning of all wees being in the potty again and at about 11am he kept touching his bottom and was walking like a penguin.  Eventually after about 45 minutes of this and numerous trips to the potty with his Leaptop he finally did a poo – and it was on the potty!  He did catch me covering my mouth as a gagged though and covered his own so I really need to try and be a bit stronger as I don’t want him to think it’s a bad thing!

We then had our first wee accident.  Just after discussing with the Hubby how Spud never seems to wee and poo at the same time Spud weed on the carpet.  I think the fact that he had spent so long on the potty meant that once the poo was finally disposed of the distraction was just too much for him.  Later on in the day whilst he was playing with the hoover we had a near accident but made it to the potty in time with just a dribble on the carpet.

So day 3 is over.  Tomorrow we are going to attempt to wear some trousers.  Whenever we have put trousers on him he’s forgotten completely what we are doing but he has Summer Creche on Monday so I don’t think they will appreciate a bottomless Spud running around!  It is really easy to think that we have cracked it but I don’t want to get complacent as I know this is a huge feat for toddlers to undertake and there will be accidents and sometimes it will feel like one step forwards, two steps back.  We have been extremely lucky so far and I definitely think it’s down to the fact that he was ready and we didn’t rush him.

  2. The Huggies Potty Training Challenge Day 1

    August 11, 2011 by Lauren

As you all know we were asked by Huggies_UK to take part in the Huggies Potty Training Challenge.  After a somewhat shaky start we all got ill so nappies went back on.  Then I was at my parents house and had the gear with me and the intention to start again, but Spud point blank refused to sit on any potty in any part of my parents house.  He even refused to sit on the toilet.

We got home on Tuesday and on Wednesday he had Holiday Club so we decided to go at it all guns blazing today.  At the Huggies shoot I spoke to Child Psychologist Emma Kenny who advised me that even though Spud asked for a nappy and refused to go for a wee on the potty he was ready and that it was down to me to be consistent.  Because I had been given this advice I knew that if i was faced with “NO POTTY MUMMY!” again that it wasn’t that he wasn’t ready just that I had to be the one to be strong.  Doing their business in a nappy is easy for a child.  They don’t have to think about it and they don’t have to stop what they are doing.  In preparation I discovered that I had to move the potty into our downstairs toilet because now that Spike is moving he has developed somewhat of an obsession with it.

Last night I said to him that from today all wee wees and poo poos had to go in the potty.  His immediate answer was no despite the excitement he had shown when we very first received our
    Huggies Potty Training Pack
.  This morning straight after breakfast the nappy came off.  We had a hard hour of him crying, pointing at the nappies, whinging and generally not being very happy about it.  Eventually I managed to get him to do a huge wee on the potty and the Hubby and I went bananas!  Spud was slightly shocked by the reaction from us but soon joined in and even decided to do another huge wee!  I honestly didn’t know his little bladder could hold that much.

It all went swingingly after that with even an accidental poo on the potty.  Now I can deal with nappies.  I can even deal with poorly bottom nappies but I am really struggling with his poo in the potty.  Every time it makes me gag and I’m stood there trying to be positive and excited about it but also pushing away the urge to throw up.  It really doesn’t make sense to me!  Every time Spud needed a wee he came and got me and did it on the Potty.  There was a total of ZERO wee accidents on the floor today!  However we did have one accident.  He did an almighty poo right in the middle of the playroom.  I don’t even think he meant to do it and he came and told me rather than examining/squishing/picking it.  At bath time we put him in as usual and within minutes he was crying his eyes out.  I managed to understand “down please” from him and saw he was holding his bits.  I asked him if he wanted the potty and he literally jumped out of the bath and onto the potty to do a wee.

I am so so proud of him, it couldn’t have gone any better (except for the poo incident!) I just hope that it is the sign of things to come and not just a fluke!!

  3. The Huggies Potty Training Challenge Update!

    July 13, 2011 by Lauren

Earlier I wrote this post about our impending adventure on The Huggies Potty Training Challenge.  I mentioned that we would be starting properly next week and this was due to him being at Creche three times a week and an all day visit to the farm on Tuesday.  Well tonight after tea he had filled his nappy so I changed him and left him nappy free for a while as I didn’t want to waste a nappy when we only had 20 minutes until bath time.  (For some reason I can’t reuse nappies even if they are still bone dry!)

Well after about 10 minutes he started pointing at the nappies and I just ignored him and kept a close eye.  He tinkled a tiny tiny bit on his leg and then on the floor but got quite agitated when I took him away from the nappies and to the potty.  Luckily Thomas the Tank Engine was on hand and I started to read to him.  He did his first ever wee wee on the potty!

It was really funny because as he started he looked down with a look as if to say “Whaaaaaaaaat is that?!”  He stood up and I went bananas.  I have never done so much praising in my life!  He seemed very interested in his wee wee so I quickly emptied it and we made a huge deal about the fact that he got a sticker on his chart.

I let him run around a bit more and he squatted over his toy bus!  I quickly got him on the potty and he did his second wee wee!  Another lot of over the top praise, high fives and a sticker!  We emptied the potty, he flushed the chain and then decided to tell me he wanted to sit on it again.  He did his third wee wee!  Granted he had to force it out but at least he’s “got” the concept!  Yet more over the top praise, high fives and a sticker.

Now is when Hubby started to find it hilarious.  Spud decided he wanted to go wee wee AGAIN.  He sat there straining to go for a wee whilst the Hubby chuckles on about how I’m being played by a two year old!  Yet more over the top praise, high fives and a sticker.

Wee number 5 is where it got interesting.  He sat there straining his little head off and did a little poo.  He was not happy.  The lip came out and his eyes filled with tears.  Now I have never been excited over poo before and I never thought i’d hear myself shouting in a high pitched voice about how great poo was!

We disposed of it and he said goodbye as he flushed the chain (how could I not laugh at that?!)

Now here is our potential problem.  After the poo incident he didn’t want to sit back on the pot.  I’m not sure if it was the poo or just that he really didn’t need a wee.  I’m sure I will find out soon enough.  We are still going to use nappies until next week like we originally planned even if we do the odd hour or so a day until then nappy free.  I will keep you posted on his progress but for now I am ending this Blog entry ONE PROUD MAMA!

  4. The Huggies Potty Training Challenge!

    July 13, 2011 by Lauren

For weeks I have been talking about Potty Training Spud. I started during the Easter Holidays but he would get very frustrated every time I asked him if he wanted to go for a wee wee so after 5 accidents we decided to leave him a little bit longer. The Summer Holidays are fast approaching and Creche have told me that he asks to use their Potty so I should definitely be thinking about doing it. I told them as soon as the holidays start we are going at it with both barrels as he has been showing signs at home that he might be ready. This morning for example his nappy leaked through and he was shouting that he was wet.

I am absolutely terrified.  It’s a mixture of trying to get him to understand, trying not get angry at accidents and the fact that my tiny baby is growing up.  Loosing his nappy will turn him in to a proper little boy rather than my vulnerable little baby.  Don’t get me wrong I don’t like changing nappies but just the fact that he relies on me for something!  I know he will still be my little baby that gives me cuddles and kisses but to me it is one of the final steps out of babyhood.  That aside I know that it is something that has to be done so trying to look at it positively and perhaps even make it a fun experience for us both!

Last week Huggies_UK announced on Twitter the release of their new Potty Training App for the iPhone. I immediately downloaded it ready to embark on the great potty training adventure with Spud next week. It was free to download and after a quick play I found all of its funky features (It will be reviewed once we have used it properly)

Huggies_UK heard of our enthusiasm and offered to send us some Pull Up’s to review. Yesterday a HUGE box arrived from Huggies which took me totally by surprise as I had been expecting a small sample packet!

We have been invited to take part in “The Huggies Potty Training Challenge!” I was most excited and start sifting through our new goodies, which included some Pull Ups, a guide to Potty Training and some wet wipes.  Pretty much everything we need to get us started!

I have hidden the box from Spud because I am hoping that it will get him excited about our new adventure when the time comes next week to properly start potty training.

Our aim is to go cold turkey without Nappies during the day and wear Huggies Pull Ups in bed.  We will be doing daily updates on our Blog so you can track his progress on our Twitter and Facebook pages.  We will also include reviews on the Pull Ups, iPhone app and any other gadget or product that we find handy on our journey.

  5. Review – Pourty: the potty that pours

    July 4, 2011 by Lauren

We were extremely thrilled to receive a Pourty to try out now that we are entering the dreaded exciting potty training stage with Spud.  We have had a few potties littering out house for the past year to try and get Spud used to the idea and for him to try out at his leisure.  He doesn’t really like the standard shaped potty and spends the whole time wriggling to get comfortable and often ends up falling off and tipping the potty over.  This was one of my biggest reservations when I first opened the parcel that the Pourty came in.  My first observation was that it was a lot more solid that any potty of similar size and shape.  The thick plastic makes it very sturdy and so far even with Spud being silly and pretending to fall off of it we haven’t had any tipping.

He was very interested in his new Pourty and immediately wanted to give it a whirl.  I was worried that the gap out the back would compromise the support but it is shaped in such a way that the sitting child doesn’t even notice that there is a hole.  The two sides surrounding the ‘spout’ give ample support even to Spud who spent a lot of the time leaning back against the wall!  The carry handle is very good for disposing it as it makes the Pourty stable and means that the contents don’t slosh about like they do in a standard potty.  It makes the whole event much easier and a lot more hygienic.  The pouring system is great, the contents go straight down without any spilling over the edge or completely missing the toilet!

With potty training a boy a splash guard is essential for us.  We have found with other potties of a similar shape the splash guard is always adequate but leaves enough space for Spud to be able to play with see his boy bits which are far more fascinating that the task at hand.  With the Pourty the splash guard is high which stops him from being distracted and also saves my floors from little accidents!

The Pourty retails at £9.99 but considering I paid £6.99 for a Supermarket own brand standard potty it’s not bad at all.  They are available from these retailers.

Overall a great product and total value for money.  I can see why it wins lots of awards and look forward to using it throughout our potty training adventure!

I did not receive any financial reward for writing this review. However, we did receive the product for review purposes. This post is my own honest opinion. For more information please see our Disclosure Policy.
