Guest Post – The family holiday guide to Miami

Written by Lauren on. Posted in Miscellaneous

Planning a trip to the sunshine state? Then be prepare to be dazzled by the neon exuberance of iconic Miami. From the surreal, beautiful inhabitants that flit around the dazzling sands of South Beach, to the art-deco architecture that has become shorthand for Ocean Drive, this palm-shaded haven has everything your family needs to have a good time.

So now your flights are booked there are just a few things you need to do in order to ensure your holiday goes as smoothly as an Ocean Breeze cocktail.

What to pack

Miami is one fashionable destination, so forget the baggy shorts and tropical shirts endemic to its touristy relation, Orlando. Instead, pack bright basics for exploring during the day, and at least one smart outfit for dinner.

The kids will need plenty of sunblock, swimming gear and shades, and, if there’s room, snorkels and pool inflatables. As a fun, cheap, diversion, provide them with a disposable camera and tell them to take some holiday snaps.

What to research in advance

Miami is a huge city, so download an offline map and sight planner for your smartphone, and spend some time looking at your hotel on Street view to get your virtual bearings. It could save you valuable time when you arrive. Research child-friendly restaurants in your neighbourhood, then, consult with the rest of the family on an activities shortlist: it could save you tears and tantrums if you draft out an itinerary before jetting off.

Bear in mind that some of Miami’s most popular attractions can get busy, fast, but there’s nothing to stop you from booking your tickets in advance in order to get discounted entry.

What to do

Jungle Island Miami is very popular with families. This zoological park is home to pink flamingos, tortoises and a rare, white tiger, and kids will love the many animal shows throughout the day for visitors. Then, if you haven’t had your fill of fauna, flit to Biscayne National Park, where coral reefs, hiking trails and glass-bottomed boat tours await to whisk you off on an adventure.

Give superficial South Beach a swerve, and instead venture to the more family-friendly Crandon Park. Kids can go wild at the Amusement Centre on Key Biscayne, while the adults can rent a cabana, fire up a BBQ or splash around in the warm, safe waters that lap its sandy shoreline.

Miami is the perfect family holiday destination; it has sun, sand and will create super long-lasting memories that you and yours will treasure forever.
