Guest Post – Breakfasts around the world

Written by Lauren on. Posted in Miscellaneous

It’s hard to believe today when we can tuck into so much choice for breakfast that this much-loved dish didn’t always exist. Europe’s ancestors, the Romans saw breakfast as a form of gluttony and, for religious reasons; this meal didn’t come into a fashion of sorts until the Middle Ages. It wasn’t until the 17th century that egg dishes started to appear with morning tea and coffee and a trend for an early meal took firm hold.

Nowadays, people tend to breakfast all over the world in a wonderful variety of ways and it is often seen as the most important meal of the day.

British breakfast

Judging from its appearance far and wide in holiday resorts, the English breakfast is possibly one of Britain’s top exports. This typically British fare isn’t the real thing unless it includes rashers of bacon, a serving of baked beans, fried eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes, toast, sausages and the increasingly popular hash browns.

The last but not least delicious item on the list can be time consuming to make from scratch. Luckily McCain Foods has tasty hash browns ready-made to perfect the English breakfast.

Hash Brown recipe

This delicious potato fritter takes us to our next breakfast stop; the USA. Hugely popular as part of an American breakfast of eggs, pancakes and sausages, hash browns add a savoury twist to the first meal of the day.

The ingredients of potato, onions, seasoning and oil mean they’re nutritious too. No wonder hash browns find themselves on breakfast plates on both sides of the Atlantic.

Continental breakfast

At the other end of the breakfast spectrum is the Continental breakfast which hints at the type of meal served up in the likes of France, Italy and Spain. It typically consists of toast, croissants, pastries and coffee or tea.

Nice and light, it’s ideal for those who want a bite in the morning without having anything too filling.

Something different

What one man calls dinner, another calls breakfast. In exotic Asia, breakfasts vary regionally but a common staple is a bowl of spicy noodles! Other breakfast ingredients include loads of greens and steamed rice flour snacks filled with shrimp and veggies.

South America breakfast tend to bready dishes like portable pocket sandwiches, corn griddle cakes and yummy egg-filled muffins.

It seems that when it comes to the first meal of the day, variety really is the spice of life!
