When Dycem asked us if we wanted to review one of their funky animal shaped non slip mats I jumped at the chance but was a little dubious. We have tried so many non slip bowls, plates, mats, highchair trays that it’s beyond ridiculous. We settled for giving Spike his dinner straight onto his tray (if self feeding) but with Spud he would always end up chasing his bowl around trying to get the last bits of food out.
The award winning Dycem non slip animal mats are a multi-purpose, adhesive free mat which literally does what it says on the tin. It is a simple design, available in Hippo or Tortoise shape in blue, red, yellow or green. Being non toxic and latex free it is perfectly safe for children to eat off of and can be easily cleaned using warm soapy water.
Spud received a yellow tortoise mat and he loves it. The animal shape and bright colour are very appealing to little people and he put it straight onto his table for dinner. I was shocked that once it’s on the table it really doesn’t slip. I tried to slide it into a more suitable position and it wouldn’t budge! The same happened when I put his plate on. It just doesn’t move! We finally have something that enables Spud to be independent and get every last scrap of food out of his bowl without it running away from him. It’s 35cm by 25cm so the perfect size for a dinner plate with some space to catch spilled food.
It’s also great for playing on, where he hasn’t quite grasped that Duplo fits together smoothly he often puts a piece down and tries to force the next piece on top. The Dycem mat means that the bottom piece doesn’t slip out and fly across the room leading to a tantrum or fit of frustration. Priced at around £8 they are about the same price you would pay for any children’s place mat and with the non slip feature it is definitely worth buying.
