With the nights getting colder and Spike getting longer his 1 tog 6-12 month sleeping bag needed to be replaced. The hunt began for a sleeping bag long enough to accommodate my long, chunky baby. A press release for By Carla caught my eye and then to my surprise they asked me on Facebook if I wanted to review one of their sleeping bags.
By Carla was launched in 2009 and is part of the Kit for Kids group. They work closely with early years professionals and real parents to create products that people really want. They provide stylish and contemporary products with funky prints that offer something a little different to your everyday baby product. The prints were what caught my eye straight away. They offer two ‘themes’ both of which are unisex and vibrant. Nougat is a black and white stripe design and Playtime is a brightly coloured montage of ‘painted’ hand and foot prints. Both styles have coordinating products ranging from blankets to Bumpies and of course the sleeping bags.
They are made from 100% cotton and both the Nougat and Playtime sleeping bags come in 1 tog and 2.5 tog and in sizes 0-6 months and 6-18 months. I was a little dubious about the sizing because Spike’s previous sleeping bag was 6-12 months and his feet were right at the end. When I opened the parcel a fantastic 6-18 month sleeping bag hung from a gorgeous black hanger. It looked plenty long enough and I quickly took it out of its packaging. I can’t stress enough that the photos of this don’t do it any justice at all – in real life it is a truly stunning product. Once out of the packaging I noticed how soft it was to touch and got quite excited about putting Spike to bed in it that night. It has detachable sleeves so when it gets really cold in the middle of winter I can simply popper those back on to give Spike a snuggily night’s sleep. The sleeves on the 0-6 month size also have fold over scratch mitts. It has a zip down one side and across the bottom which aides easy nappy changing. I have never seen a zip on a sleeping bag start under the armpit, it’s usually the other way around but it actually makes perfect sense as I no longer have to wrestle with Spike to stop the sleeping bag bunching up when I try to zip it up. I can just pull the zip down which straightens out the material as Spike wriggles around.
Whilst it hung up out of reach from sticky fingers I sat wondering if it would fit Spud. It looked really quite long but the hanger said that it was for up to 86cm. Spud is 95cm tall so I didn’t expect him to fit but tried him anyway. It fitted him perfectly. At over 2.5 years old and a tall 2.5 at that it really showed me just how long lasting this product could be.
The night I put Spike to bed in his new sleeping bag and I must admit I did get confused with the poppers around his shoulder. Because the poppers for the sleeve are there as well it took me a few minutes to work out how it all fitted together but after the first hurdle I haven’t struggled with it since. Although it is long, it isn’t too long. Spike is a fidget bum in his sleep and is yet to tie himself in knots with this sleeping bag like he has with previous ones. He can still stand up in his cot wearing it without their being so much fabric that he trips over it.
I absolutely love the By Carla 2.5 tog Nougat sleeping bag. It is fab quality and so snuggily and soft that I wouldn’t mind having one myself! It looks absolutely gorgeous with its funky modern design. With an RRP of £27.99 they are a little pricier than some places but for the quality and styling as well as the length of time that it will last a child, it is excellent value for money. I urge you to check out their other products in the range, my Hubby’s wallet is about to suffer because I have my eye of Bumpies and blankets! The 2.5 tog Nougat sleeping bag is available from retailers including Amazon, Mothercare and JoJo Mamanbebe. You can find a full list of stockists here.
